Upcoming fifth grader you are about to begin an exciting year in fifth grade. Below is a letter telling you about some of the things we will study and items you will need for the upcoming year. Have a great summer! Dear Fifth Grade Families, Welcome to another wonderful school year at Mountain View Elementary School! The first day of school is quickly approaching – Monday, August 28, 2017. This year promises to be a year full of learning and excitement! During this school year, your child will be learning about weather, force and motion, ecosystems, human body systems, and genetics in science. In math our main focus will be fractions, decimals, and place value. It is very important that your child knows their multiplication, addition, and subtraction facts prior to the start of the school year. Also, we will be completing writing prompts throughout the year and it is necessary for your child to be able to write in complete sentences with correct punctuation. In social studies we will be learning about the history of the United States from the early settlements of Jamestown through reconstruction after the Civil War. In reading we will be studying the concepts of theme, main idea and summarizing and we will examine text structure elements including: comparing/contrasting, problem and solution, and inferencing /drawing conclusions. We will continue to emphasize the importance of providing text evidence to support answers to comprehension questions. We will also be working on building a strong vocabulary and using context clues to enhance our comprehension skills. In order to build stamina and practice their reading skills, students will be expected to read 5 nights a week for 20 minutes, for a total of 100 minutes per week. Students will be required to read novels and informational text. Thank you for your continued commitment to your child's education and unwavering dedication to Mountain View Elementary School. We are looking forward to seeing you at Open House! (TBD) See you at school, Fifth Grade Teachers
